The artwork in detail

A large sailing ship moves toward the right side of the painting, its dark hull lifted by a blue-green swell. The light sails, tiered around the masts, occupy almost the entire height of the image. On the horizon, a pink band warms the pale sky; near the bow, the white foam makes the ship’s forward thrust palpable. The painting bears a legible signature at the lower right: «W. De Conti». By virtue of its subject, this scene belongs to marine painting: the vessel’s movement matters as much as its imposing silhouette. The contrast between the cream sails and the almost black hull gives the composition its framework. Fine lines follow the rigging, while oblique shadows divide the rows of canvas. In the sea, freer brushstrokes alternate between deep blues, greens and accents of foam. The light remains soft, despite the momentum of the voyage. A frame with a wide, gold-toned moulding, edged with light lines, surrounds the scene. Its warm hue complements the pink of the horizon without softening the contrast between the ship and the sea. Between the precision of the sails and the freedom of the waves, the painting captures the moment when the mass of the sailing ship seems to be borne by the water even as it cuts through it.
