The artwork in detail

This oil painting on panel unfolds a harbour scene in which sailboats and small boats cluster around a luminous opening in the water. In the foreground, fishermen go about their work beside the nets laid out on the boats. Their compact silhouettes, highlighted in white, introduce a familiar human presence amid the dark hulls and rigging. The composition is organised around a contrast between the vertical thrust of the masts and the horizontal glide of the reflections. On the left, the large ochre, brown and olive-green sails form a succession of planes that draws the eye towards the far end of the harbour. On the right, boats moored alongside one another frame a bright passage; farther away, two isolated sails punctuate the expanse before a low-lying shore. Work with the palette knife gives the painting its material vigour. Broad, spread strokes, crisp edges and impasto accents construct the sails, emphasise the rigging and break up the reflections. The boats’ warm browns, muted greens and orange notes respond to the grey-green nuances of the sky. In the water, cream and pale-yellow strokes trace a path of light between the boats, while the sky unfolds in long swathes of colour. The work measures 30 × 40 cm unframed and 42 × 50 cm framed. The work combines the intimacy of a scene of labour with a broad maritime expansiveness. The density of the boats in the foreground is balanced by the luminous openness of the horizon, giving this format a sustained pictorial presence, supported by the relief of the paint and the rhythm of the sails.
