Le surfer

With its thick impastos and horizon almost melted into the material, this small painting condenses a scene of speed into a very physical image. The surfer is not described in detail: rather, he emerges in the midst of a sea of blues, whites, and blacks that almost becomes one with him. The sail, positioned on the left, organizes the composition with immediate graphic force, while the silhouette of the athlete, reduced to a few signs and a flash of red, remains caught in the flow of the element. The interest of the work lies precisely in this tension between identifiable motif and pictorial dissolution. Everything is a matter of thrust, sliding, and resistance; the painting imitates the swell as much as it translates its energy. About the artist — Jean-Pierre Corpataux, known as Le Boucher Corpaato, is a Swiss artist born in Fribourg in 1950. A former master butcher turned self-taught painter, he has created a body of work recognizable for its physical relationship to the material and its recurring themes related to the rural world, meat, and Fribourg traditions. This strongly marked identity does not exclude variations in subject, as evidenced here by this motif of windsurfing, treated with the same pictorial frankness and descriptive energy.
