Ainsi font-ils

Ainsi font-ils, dated 2008 on the reverse, places a slender bottle beside a broad pale form and a large brown vase with an undulating rim. Soft shadows cross the light surface of the central motif, while slanting reflections animate the bottle and vase. These three forms occupy almost the full height of the composition. The palette combines amber browns, ochres, greys and warm whites. The background, marked by sweeping brushwork, does not describe a specific room; it opens an undefined space around the objects. The horizontal ledge, by contrast, gives them a firm base and guides the eye towards the right. Here, tiny figures appear beside an orange banner. Their small scale in relation to the vessels introduces a fanciful note and makes their connection enigmatic. The title, inscribed on the back, may invite us to relate this small scene to the large, still forms without imposing a single narrative. The signature Roll is visible at the lower left.
