Le Jour de Gloire

In Le Jour de Gloire, Jean Roll assembles utensils and vessels on a dark, reflective surface. An upright knife, a spoon and a long black handle draw diagonals above rounded volumes. In the foreground, a glass, an egg and a sprig of holly with red berries introduce smaller forms, treated with equal attention. The pink background, shaded with mauve, contrasts with the blacks, metallic greys and white highlights of the objects. Reflections on glass and metal, the curves of the vessels and the sharp outline of the blade create a tense balance. On the right, a vessel lying on its side points out from the group, while the holly adds a coloured accent near the lower edge. The title invites a reading beyond an inventory of household objects. Their arrangement may suggest a theatrical setting, or a tension between the familiar and the strange. The precision of the painting leaves room for an open reading, in which each object retains its own presence while contributing to the strangeness of the whole.
