The artwork in detail

Between two masses of trees, a small stone bridge forms a broad arch above the Venoge. The eye follows the current, animated by green and silvery reflections, to the luminous opening of Lake Geneva; in the distance, a bluish shore gently closes the horizon. The scene combines the shaded intimacy of the river with the open expanse of the lake. Signed and dated at lower left “A. Piot. 95.”, the painting is also identified on the reverse by a handwritten inscription: “Venoge – (près de St-Sulpice) – Lac Léman”. This designation corresponds to the site where the Venoge flows into Lake Geneva, between Saint-Sulpice and Préverenges. It gives this landscape view a precise topographical anchoring. Armand Piot structures the painting through strong contrasts: the dark foliage frames the light sky, while the bridge’s arch connects the two banks in a single movement. Applied in short, visible strokes, the paint lightens the foliage and makes the water vibrate. Olive greens, luminous yellows and fresh blues compose an outdoor light, responsive to the variations of the day. Executed in oil on canvas, the work measures 33 × 41 cm unframed and 46 × 54 cm including its frame. The canvas is mounted on a keyed stretcher; the reverse preserves the location inscription and the artist’s name, material elements useful for identifying the subject. The painting is presented in a frame with a broad, golden-brown profile, accompanied by a wide ivory inner moulding. This framing creates a light space around the painting that extends the opening of the sky and lake. Through the bridge’s calm curve and the shifting play of reflections, this view of the Venoge captures a moment of equilibrium between the freshness of the bank and the expanse of Lake Geneva.
