The artwork in detail

Under a grey-blue sky, an aqua-green suitcase stands alone in a white plain, near a monumental trunk with darkened reds. Above it, a dark umbrella, accented with orange, seems torn free from all gravity. The emptiness separating these three presences gives the landscape a quiet tension, like a scene arrested from a narrative whose denouement is deliberately missing. Signed “Verdirosi” in white at the lower right, the canvas bears the name of Umberto Verdirosi, an Italian artist born in 1935. His career, initially linked to the theatre before a lasting commitment to painting, cautiously sheds light on the almost stage-like construction of the image. The artist himself defines his art as a language of symbols and messages. Here, the narrative arises from the distance between the objects rather than from an action. The massive vertical of the trunk responds to that of the more fragile suitcase; the umbrella introduces an airy and unstable diagonal. Dark contours, applied with graphic liveliness, enclose the motifs. Broad horizontal brushstrokes of grey, white and blue establish the snowy expanse without closing off its horizon. Executed in oil on canvas, the work allows the textile weave to show through in some thinly painted passages. The reverse shows a canvas mounted on a stretcher, held in its frame by fastening strips. The framing combines a brown and silver outer profile with a wide, textured brown mount. Its generous recess creates a space around the small scene that accentuates its character as a silent theatre. Between winter landscape and inner enigma, the motionless suitcase and drifting umbrella leave it to the viewer to invent what comes next in the journey.
