Jean Hippolyte Marchand, also known as Jean Marchand and J. H. Marchand, trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Léon Bonnat’s studio from 1902 to 1906. He is also described as a pupil of Henri Martin at the Académie Vitti. From 1910, he exhibited in Paris and London, notably at the Salon des indépendants and the Section d’Or. His work at the time is associated with Post-Impressionism, with Nature morte aux bananes cited as an example; his style later evolved towards Cubism. His career also included a mission in Syria.
Several works dated 1912 attest to the diversity of the subjects and techniques recorded: Le Palais Azem à Damas and Malloula (Anti-Liban) are ink and watercolour drawings, while Femme à sa toilette is an oil on canvas. Femme à la fenêtre, an oil on cardboard signed at the lower left and measuring 41 × 33 cm, completes this documented group.
In November 1921, the Barbazanges gallery organised a retrospective of his work. After the First World War, Marchand produced woodcuts and lithographs for books; his contribution to the edition of Paul Valéry’s Cimetière marin was published by La Centaine in 1927. A monograph by René-Jean was devoted to him as early as 1925, published by Gallimard in the « Les peintres français nouveaux » collection.
