Georges Laporte

Born : 1926Died : 2000Documented citizenships : France

Painter, lithographer and illustrator, Georges-Charles Laporte developed a body of work in which seascape painting sits alongside a substantial body of illustration, notably for texts by Émile Verhaeren, Armand Lanoux and Jean Giono. Born in Montmartre in 1926, he studied international trade and then worked as a customs agent before beginning to paint in 1946. Based in Saône-et-Loire from 1952 and then in Givry from 1959, he received the Prix Bastien-Lepage at the Salon des artistes français in 1958; that same year, his painting L’Asile de Nuit de la rue aux Prêtres de Chalon received the Prix de la ville d’Aix-en-Provence.

The discovery of Brittany in the 1960s marked a turning point in his subject matter: the sea became his principal theme, and he established a studio in Quiberon. The source dates the emergence of the thick applications of paint characteristic of his canvases to this period. His travels also informed groups of works devoted to specific places. From 1983, he visited Japan regularly and began a series of canvases on the country. In 1987, he went to Corsica to paint; works made during this period were later presented by the Musée de Bastia in the exhibition ‘40 Grandes Œuvres Corses’ in 1990.

Illustration formed another strand of his practice: he produced fifteen original lithographs for La Guirlande de Dunes by Émile Verhaeren, published in 1966, followed by seventeen lithographs for Les châteaux de sable by Armand Lanoux (1968) and seventeen pastels for Colline by Jean Giono (1974). Appointed Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 1972 and then Officier in 1987, Laporte died in Paris in 2000. His painted and engraved work is notably the subject of a book by Armand Lanoux published in 1982; Georges Laporte au Japon by Raphaël Mischkind was published in 1989.
