The Spanish painter and graphic artist Juan Genovés Candel—also known in Catalan as Joan Genovés i Candel—developed a body of work shaped by the repressive context of the Franco dictatorship. Born in Valencia in 1930, he died in Madrid in 2020. His training is associated with the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Carlos. From 1957 to 1961, he took part in the Parpalló Group, whose members shared an interest in renewing the visual language; the group initially turned towards informalism. In 1965, he organised a solo exhibition at the Directorate-General for Fine Arts, now the National Library of Madrid. Three years later, he founded A.S.A.P. clandestinely.
The titles of several works from the end of the Franco era and the beginning of the transition make their sociopolitical dimension explicit: Cara a la paret (“Facing the Wall”), El presoner (“The Prisoner”), Home que cau endavant (“Man Falling Forwards”) and El sospitós (“The Suspect”). Painted in 1976, El Abrazo (“The Embrace”) is symbolically associated with demands for political amnesty for prisoners of the Franco regime. The work is held at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía in Madrid.
