The German painter Franz Skarbina (1849–1910), born and deceased in Berlin, developed his career within the capital’s artistic life, combining artistic practice, teaching and collective engagement. His father, Nikolaus, was a goldsmith from Agram, and his mother, Henriette Kayser, was the daughter of a heraldic painter. Julius Schrader is listed as his teacher between 1865 and 1868. After his studies, Skarbina opened his own studio at 21 Prinzenstraße in Berlin and gave drawing lessons. A journey undertaken in 1871–1872 took him to Dresden, Vienna, Venice, Merano, Munich and Nuremberg. In 1877, he visited the Netherlands, Belgium and France, where he took lessons.
In Paris, he was influenced by the Impressionists: he painted scenes of Parisian life in this style. He lived there mainly from 1882 to 1886 and exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon from 1883 onwards. During this period, he also travelled to North Africa, Holland and Belgium. In 1878, he became a professor at the Berlin Academy. He also headed the section for academic drawing and anatomy at the Berlin School of Applied Arts. The biography states that he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts from 1888; in 1892, he was appointed a member of the Berlin Academy of Arts.
In 1892, he was a member of the Association of the XI, described as having been founded in part by Skarbina, Max Liebermann and Walter Leistikow; six years later, he was among the founders of the Berlin Secession. In 1895, he became an illustrator and adviser to the journal Pan. In 1902, he returned to the Berlin Artists’ Association and held official positions there. The works cited include Lady at the Beach (1883), Silesian Gate (1894), All Saints’ Day (St Hedwig’s Cemetery) (1896), held at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin, and Under the Christmas Tree (1892), located at the Stadtmuseum Berlin. A lot description also identifies Spielende Kinder am Strand as an oil on wood measuring 21.5 × 19.5 cm, signed «F. Skarbina» at lower right.
