Jan Philip van Thielen (1618–1667), a Flemish painter born in Mechelen, specialised in flower painting. His work consists mainly of bouquets, arrangements and garlands, exploring different forms of floral composition.
In 1640, he married Françoise van Hemelaer and became the brother-in-law of Erasmus II Quellin. The following year, he became Daniel Seghers’s only pupil. He lived and worked in Antwerp until 1659, then returned to Mechelen.
He often produced his compositions in collaboration with other painters, notably Erasmus II Quellin, Cornelis van Poelenburgh and Cornelis Schut, who executed the rest of the painting. The recorded signatures changed over the decades: “I. P. Van Thielen Rigouldts” in the 1640s, “I. P. Van Thielen” in the 1650s, and “I. P. Van Thielen Heere Van CouwenBerche” in the 1660s.
