León Ferrari

Born : 1920Died : 2013Documented citizenships : Argentina

León Ferrari (1920–2013), born in Buenos Aires, developed a practice in which graphic experimentation meets political criticism. In the early 1960s, his drawings explored networks of lines and sometimes illegible writing. In 1964 he paired his images with poems by Rafael Alberti in the book Escrito en el Aire.

La civilización occidental y cristiana, from 1965, places a crucified Christ on a model American military aircraft, denouncing the violence of the Vietnam War. In 1976 Ferrari went into exile in Brazil in response to Argentina’s dictatorship. He continued a practice combining drawing, sculpture, collage and reproduction. The Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2007 and a joint exhibition with Mira Schendel at MoMA in 2009 affirmed his international significance.

This profile brings together identity references for León Ferrari and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
