Johann Julius Heinsius (1740–1812) was a German portrait painter whose career developed principally in France. Born into a family of painters, he was the son of Johann Christian Heintz and younger brother of Johann Ernst Heinsius. In 1767 he belonged to the Confrérie in The Hague; his subsequent travels included Lille, Douai and Rouen before he settled in Paris.
Living in Paris by 1779, he exhibited at the Salon de la Correspondance. During the 1780s he painted the daughters of Louis XV, known as Mesdames de France. The Revolution prompted his move to Orléans, which remained his home until his death, although he occasionally worked again in Paris during the Empire. Portraiture in oils formed the core of his practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Johann Julius Heinsius and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
