Louis Aston Knight (1873–1948) was an American painter born in Paris, the son of painter Daniel Ridgway Knight. Raised in Europe, he received his first lessons from his father before studying with Tony Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1894, developing a career that connected French and American artistic circles.
He concentrated primarily on landscape, particularly gardens, villages and waterways in Normandy. Moving water and effects of light became favoured subjects in his outdoor painting. An admirer of Claude Monet, whom he visited in Giverny, he also cultivated his own garden as a source of motifs. Exhibitions in New York, including Knoedler in 1911, strengthened his recognition in the United States.
This profile brings together identity references for Louis Aston Knight and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
