Kim En Joong’s career brings together painting, a life as a Dominican, and the creation of stained-glass windows, with the project at the Basilica of Saint-Julien in Brioude serving as an important milestone. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Seoul, he also took French classes; according to his biography, a meeting with a calligraphy teacher in 1956 led him towards graphic arts. After arriving in Europe in 1969, he studied art history in Switzerland, followed by theology and metaphysics.
He joined the Dominican Order in 1970 and was ordained a priest four years later. In Paris, the Convent of the Annunciation became his home for community life and artistic work. Having already exhibited in Seoul during his studies, he presented his first black-and-white works at Galerie Massol in Paris in 1973. His biography states that he subsequently moved away from acrylic in favour of oil painting and produced large-format works in which the whites recede and the colours become more pronounced. In 1982, Galerie Chave in Vence devoted a first exhibition to him. In 2007, together with master glassmaker Bruno Loire, he was awarded the commission for the stained-glass windows of the basilica in Brioude following a competition involving 54 teams. The project comprises 37 window bays, with a total of 150 m² of stained glass. In August 2010, he received the insignia of Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters, notably for the creation of the stained-glass windows in Brioude. Founded in 2009, the Institut Kim En Joong aims to organise meetings and support artists in the spirit of sacred art. In 2011–2012, the Centre international du Vitrail presents the exhibition “Kim En Joong – Entre ciel et terre”.
