Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio

Born : 1902Died : 1964Documented citizenships : Italy

The Italian painter Giuseppe Pinot-Gallizio, born and deceased in Alba, makes industrial painting and its deployment in space a central part of his work. Born Giuseppe Gallizio, he obtains a degree in chemistry and pharmacy from the University of Turin in 1924, then runs a pharmacy in Alba from 1930 to 1941. His career also includes local civic involvement: after fighting with the partisans in February 1944, he joins the municipal government of Alba in May 1945 as a member of the National Liberation Committee, where he participates until 1960. From 1946, he teaches herbalism, aromas and oenology; the source attributes the origin of his nickname, “Pinot”, to these activities.

His meeting with the painter Piero Simondo in 1952 marks his introduction to artistic techniques. In 1955, he meets Asger Jorn in Albisola and subsequently, in September in Alba, founds the Experimental Laboratory of the International Movement for an Imaginist Bauhaus with Jorn and Simondo. With Jorn, he organises the First World Congress of Free Artists in Alba in September 1956, where delegates from eight nations gather around the theme “Free Arts and Industrial Activity”. Present at the founding vote of the Situationist International in July 1957, he abstains, then participates in the movement until his exclusion in May 1960.

In early 1958, at the Experimental Laboratory in Alba, he develops “industrial painting”, conceived as a challenge to easel painting. The first work takes the form of a roll 68 metres long and 75 centimetres wide, presented at the Notizie gallery in Turin in May 1958. He subsequently produces and sells this painting by the metre, a format that shifts the work from the autonomous picture to a rollable material. In May 1959, at the Drouin gallery in Paris, he covers the walls, ceiling and floor with 145 metres of industrial painting to create the “Caverne de l’anti-matière”.

The works mentioned include La Caverne de l’anti-matière (1958–1960), Le Notti di cristallo (1960–1962) and La Gibigianna, a series of eight paintings dated 1960. According to an auction listing, he meets the painter Soshana Afroyim in Paris in 1959 and creates around twenty works with her in his studio in Alba.
