José Camarón y Bonanat

Born : 1731Died : 1803Documented citizenships : Spain

José Camarón Boronat, also named José Camarón Bonanat by some biographers, was a Spanish painter and printmaker born in Segorbe in 1731. His practice encompassed painting, miniature painting, pastel and printmaking, as well as a longstanding commitment to the artistic institutions of Valencia and Madrid. He first trained with his father, then with his uncle Eliseo Boronat, a miniature painter, and with the painter Miguel Posadas. He moved to Madrid in 1752 to continue his studies, returning to Valencia two years later, where he was appointed professor of painting at the Academy of Fine Arts of Santa Bárbara.

In 1762, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid admitted him as an honorary member. He became director of the Academy of Santa Bárbara in 1765 and was among the founders of the Royal Academy of San Carlos. Early in his career, he painted landscapes and miniatures and copied works by Titian, Rubens, Van Dyck and Murillo. He also worked in pastel and printmaking, demonstrating a practice that extended beyond painting.

His works include his participation in the painting cycle of the Basilica of San Francisco el Grande in Madrid and the frescoes in Segorbe Cathedral, begun in 1800. After his death, his son Manuel Camarón Meliá continued the project and completed it in 1806. His print El Padre Eterno reproduces the ceiling painting made by Francisco Bayeu around 1791 in the oratory of the Palace of Aranjuez; a copy of this print is held at the Museo del Prado.
