Born in Castellammare di Stabia in 1859, Ettore Tito studied at the Venice Academy under Pompeo Marino Molmenti. His early paintings belong to the Venetian naturalism associated with Giacomo Favretto, depicting popular scenes, markets and everyday life around the lagoon. Working outdoors with Pietro Fragiacomo encouraged a lively approach attentive to light and unexpected viewpoints.
An exhibitor at the first Venice Biennale in 1895, Tito also became a sought-after portraitist. His work developed towards Symbolist compositions and large decorative projects inspired by Venetian painting, particularly Tiepolo. In 1933 he completed the ceiling of the Scalzi church, replacing the decoration destroyed during the First World War. He died in Venice in 1941, having combined observations of contemporary life with an increasingly ambitious decorative practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Ettore Tito and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
