Spanish painter born and deceased in Barcelona, Joan Hernández Pijuan developed a body of work whose early stages are marked by expressionist painting with existential resonance, followed by geometric figuration organised around isolated elements and grids. He studied at the Llotja School, then at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he trained from 1952 to 1956. According to the biography published by Galerie Michelle Champetier, his first exhibition took place in 1953, when his work was described as expressionist and of existential resonance. The Municipal Museum of Mataró hosted his first solo exhibition in 1955; he was also among the founders of the Silex group, with Carles Planell, Eduard Alcoy, Lázaro and Josep Maria Rovira i Requesón.
In 1957, he went to Paris to study engraving and lithography at the École des beaux-arts. The biography published by Galerie Michelle Champetier goes on to describe a geometric figuration in which fruit, glasses and eggs appear as solitary elements associated with grids. From 1977, he taught at the Sant Jordi School of Fine Arts in Barcelona. In 1989, he became a professor of painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Barcelona, where he was appointed dean in 1992. From 1980, he served on the activities commission of the Joan Miró Foundation in Barcelona.
In 1993, the National Art Centre Reina Sofía organised an anthological exhibition of his work, entitled «Espacios de silencio». A retrospective was presented at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art in 2011. Galerie Michelle Champetier lists among the collections holding his works the Metropolitan Museum in New York, MACBA in Barcelona, and the Museums of Art and History of Geneva and Neuchâtel.
