The artwork in detail

A dirt path leads between rustic buildings towards the heart of a small hamlet. On the left, the large whitewashed house stretches beneath an ochre roof punctuated by two tall chimneys; on the right, a lower structure opens up the composition. The blue-grey sky, crossed by heavy clouds, envelops the scene in a soft, shifting light. The signature at the lower right can be read consistently with the name Joseph G. Müller retained for this work. The painter focuses the eye on vernacular architecture rather than anecdote: the passage, the walls and the roofs are enough to establish a discreet human presence. The painting proceeds through bold brushstrokes and abundant impasto. The strokes, at times almost drawn into the thatch and grasses, give the surfaces a tangible relief. The cream whites of the façades respond to the russet browns of the roofs, while the muted greens of the foreground hold the light at the bottom of the painting. Executed in oil on canvas, the work retains a canvas mounted on a stretcher on its reverse. A moulded frame in a golden tone currently accompanies the composition. Its ample profile creates a distinct transition with the greys of the sky and highlights the intimate character of this rural view. Through the firmness of its volumes and the quivering of its materiality, the painting turns a village path into a moment of dense, almost tactile calm.
