Landscapes and scenes of rural or market life are recurring reference points in the work of Gregor von Bochmann, whose subjects span Estonia, Holland and Belgium. After attending the Tallinn Government Lyceum from 1862 to 1868, he studied in Oswald Achenbach’s landscape class for one semester in 1869, then established his studio in Düsseldorf in 1871. His study trips to the Netherlands, Belgium and Estonia provided subjects for his paintings.
The titles of his works reflect this geographical and thematic diversity: Market Square in Estonia, dated around 1870, Fish Market near Reval (1886), Shipyard in Southern Holland (1878) and On the Beach in Holland (1894) are presented alongside The Reapers, dated after 1870, Farm with Steps, Sheep and Cattle (1879) and Country Road in Estonia (1910). Alongside painting, his work also includes drawings and watercolours. Several of these paintings are held in public collections: Market Square in Estonia and Fish Market near Reval at the Kunstmuseum Düsseldorf, The Reapers and Shipyard in Southern Holland at the Berlin State Museums, Farm with Steps, Sheep and Cattle at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Country Road in Estonia at the Art Museum of Estonia, and On the Beach in Holland at the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
His recognition in the art world is attested by his admission to the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1893, the title of Royal Prussian Professor he received in 1895, and his presence on the board of the Deutscher Künstlerbund. He exhibits in Düsseldorf, Munich, Vienna, Dresden and Berlin, and takes part in the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1878. After his death, two commemorative exhibitions are held in 1930 and 1951 at the Art Association for the Rhineland and Westphalia; the 1951 exhibition brings together 70 works.
This profile brings together identity references for Gregor von Bochmann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
