The German artist Peter Dreher, born in Mannheim in 1932, devotes his principal series, Tag um Tag guter Tag (“Day after day, a good day”), to the repeated depiction of the same glass: it comprises more than five thousand paintings. His work also returns to a limited repertoire of motifs — a skull, a silver vase, a glass basin and flowers — while landscapes appear less frequently.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe from 1950 to 1956, he taught there from 1965 and took charge of the painting class in 1968. Among the distinctions awarded to him are the Reinhold Schneider Prize in 1976 and the Hans Thoma Prize in 1979; he was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000.
His childhood was marked by war: his father died on the Russian front, and the family home was destroyed by bombing. The source suggests that this experience may have influenced a practice described as finding comfort and security in repetition; this relationship remains framed as a possibility.
