The urban landscapes, cafés and street scenes of Berlin-Wedding are among Robert Liebknecht’s documented subjects after he settled in the district in 1930. Born in Berlin in 1903 and died in Paris in 1994, he was the son of Karl Liebknecht. He began taking drawing lessons in 1917, then studied with Hans Baluschek and Willy Jaeckel at a private art school in Berlin, before continuing his training with Robert Sterl in Dresden. After becoming acquainted with the Liebknecht family, Käthe Kollwitz came to know the young artist, who would later seek her opinion on his drawings.
In 1933, Liebknecht emigrated to France with his wife; during the Second World War, after his internment at the Camp des Milles, the couple went to Switzerland. He returned to France in 1948 and acquired French nationality in 1956. The museum source locates in France the development of a style characterised by intense, luminous colour.
In Paris, he took part in the Salon des Indépendants in 1937, 1939, 1953 and 1957, and exhibited at the Galerie Jeanne Castel in 1938, 1949 and 1956, then at the Galerie Peinture Fraîche in 1983. In 1953, the book Quatre-vingts Dessins d’Albert Dürer was published in Paris, for which he produced the French adaptation based on F. Winkler.
This profile brings together identity references for Robert Liebknecht and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
