Bernard Aubertin (1934–2015), a French visual artist, makes monochrome red and material central elements of his work: from 1958, he creates textured surfaces using tools such as spatulas and forks. After studying painting in Paris from 1955 to 1957, he meets Yves Klein in 1957 and is close to him from that period onwards.
From 1960, he begins the Tableaux clous, followed in 1961 by the Tableaux feu. These series extend his exploration of the surface through distinct means, from nails to the action of fire. His practice also includes performances involving burned pianos or cars. A 1969 work, Ohne Titel, is described as acrylic on nails and wood, measuring 50 × 50 × 4 cm; it is registered with the Archivio Generale Opere Bernard Aubertin in Milan.
His career leads him to live, among other places, in Brest and Reutlingen. In 2014, he takes part in the group exhibition “Zero: Countdown to tomorrow, 1950s–60s” at the Guggenheim in New York. An exhibition entitled “La nature des choses” is listed at MAMAC in Nice in 2013.
