Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg is particularly associated with landscapes, seascapes and views of continental and Mediterranean cities, often crossed by waterways. The coastal landscapes of Brittany and Normandy also feature in his work; he also studied gales on the Breton coast and in the North Sea for a time.
The son of the painter Karl-Josef Kuwasseg (1802–1877), described as being of Austrian origin and later naturalised as a French citizen, he worked with his father and spent some time as a sailor. He received his initial training from his father before studying with Jean-Baptiste-Henri Durand-Brager and Eugène Isabey. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1855 and subsequently exhibited regularly at that salon and at the Salon des Artistes français. In 1892, he received a medal at the Salon des Artistes français, described by one source as a bronze medal. He then devoted himself to teaching; his pupils included Marie-Joseph-Léon Clavel Iwilli and Émile Clarel.
Works by Kuwasseg are recorded in museums in Digne, Montréal, Pontoise, La Rochelle and Rouen; one source also mentions Périgueux.
