Lajos Kassák

Born : 1887Died : 1967Documented citizenships : Hungary

Self-taught, Lajos Kassák turned to avant-garde movements and identified himself as a proletarian artist, a position he upheld throughout his life. In 1909, while working as a labourer and aspiring poet, he set out on foot from Budapest to Paris, with the sculptor Gödrös and, among his travelling companions, Emil Szittya. His activities also extended to periodicals: he founded Tett in 1915, Ma in 1916 and Munka in 1926.

He transformed this journey into literary material in Vagabondages, an account forming part of a broader autobiographical cycle. Published in Budapest in 1927, the book appeared in France with Corvina in 1972 and was later republished by Séguier. The writing recounts episodes of violence and surprise, as well as the images and comic situations of the journey. His other publications include Épopée sous le masque de Wagner (Eposz Wagner maszkjában), published in 1915, and La Vie d’un homme (Egy ember élete), an autobiographical account published in 1937 and covering the period 1928–1937. Amour, amour (Szerelem, szerelem) and Feuilles de chêne (Mesterek köszöntése) were both published in 1962.

The Germann Auktionshaus catalogue also describes a composition attributed to Kassák as a collage and mixed media on paper, signed and measuring 395 × 390 mm; the lot sold for CHF 4,200 excluding fees. He received the Baumgarten Prize in 1947 and the Kossuth Prize in 1965.

This profile brings together identity references for Lajos Kassák and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
