The German painter Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794–1872) trained at the Vienna Academy under Friedrich Heinrich Füger. In Rome he joined the Nazarene circle, which included Johann Friedrich Overbeck. Their project linked the renewal of painting with spiritual aspirations and the study of the early Italian and northern European Renaissance. His frescoes inspired by Ariosto at the Villa Massimo gave these concerns a monumental expression. He continued this approach in the service of Ludwig I of Bavaria: his decorations at the Munich Residenz address the Nibelungenlied and the figures of Charlemagne, Frederick Barbarossa and Rudolf of Habsburg. Appointed professor at the Munich Academy in 1827, he combined religious painting, literary narrative and history in a career also devoted to teaching.
