Heinrich Hoerle was born in Cologne in 1895 and died there in 1936. Following beginnings shaped by Expressionism, he participated in the city's Dada activity and developed a close association with Franz Wilhelm Seiwert. Alongside Seiwert and Gerd Arntz, he became a leading representative of the Cologne Progressives, who combined formal experimentation with social commitment.
His simplified figures, constructed from geometric volumes, evoke workers and bodies shaped by industrial society. War and mutilation occupy an essential place: his Krüppelmappe portfolio appeared in 1920, while Denkmal der unbekannten Prothesen, from 1930, returned to the motif of prostheses. Hoerle also contributed to the journal a bis z. Across painting and drawing, his concise figurative language connects rigorous pictorial organisation with an investigation of the human condition.
This profile brings together identity references for Heinrich Hoerle and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
