Wolf Kahn (1927–2020), born in Stuttgart, left Germany as a child, reached England and joined his family in New York in 1940. After studying with Stuart Davis and Hans Hofmann, becoming the latter’s assistant, he helped establish the Hansa Gallery. This artists’ cooperative presented his first solo exhibition in 1953.
His paintings and pastels sustain a dialogue between recognisable landscape and abstract arrangements of colour. Light can consolidate forms or appear to dissolve them, while atmospheric effects transform observed places. With the painter Emily Mason, whom he married in 1957, he purchased a Vermont farm in 1968. Summers there supported a practice divided between studies made on site and further work in his New York studio.
This profile brings together identity references for Wolf Kahn and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
