The Cuban artist Mirta Cerra Herrera, born in Bejucal and also known as Mirta Cerra, pursues a practice that combines painting and sculpture with work as an avant-garde designer and illustrator. Her distinctions include gold, silver and bronze medals for her sculptural works, as well as a bronze medal for her paintings.
She studies at the San Alejandro Academy of Painting and Sculpture until 1934. In 1935, following an examination by a selection committee, she receives a scholarship to continue her training at the Art Students League in New York, where she studies engraving, among other subjects, with Professor and engraver Henry Stembert. Documented works include “Country Boy (Guajirito)”, dated circa 1946 and described as mixed media on cardboard.
Her exhibition history includes her participation in 1940 in “Three Hundred Years of Art in Cuba”, organised at the University of Havana, as well as in the Second Ibero-American Caribbean Meeting in the Dominican Republic and an event organised by the Society of Graphic Artists in Philadelphia. A catalogue also documents an exhibition of Cerra organised in 1950 at The New School in New York. She dies in Havana on 26 September 1986.
