Thomas Ender (1793–1875), an Austrian landscape painter born in Vienna, combined academic training with extensive experience of travel. After studying with Hubert Maurer and Laurenz Janscha, he won a landscape prize in 1817 that attracted Metternich’s attention. That year he joined an expedition to Brazil sponsored by the Viennese court. A subsequent stay in Rome as a scholarship holder continued his education. Appointed painter to Archduke Johann in 1828, he accompanied him on a journey in 1837 and also taught at the Vienna Academy. His landscapes circulated through lithographic reproductions as well as paintings. The Großglockner and the Pasterze, a painting of 1832 held by the Belvedere, illustrates the importance of Alpine locations within an oeuvre shaped by travel and observation.
