Czech painter Mikuláš Medek, born in 1926 and died in 1974, worked in a context in which, according to Artsper’s biography, pressure from the communist regime in Czechoslovakia permeated his work. He was the son of Rudolf Medek, a general and writer, the brother of Ivan Medek and the grandson of the painter Antonín Slavíček.
Artsper presents his work as reflecting the oppressive atmosphere of the communist regime in Czechoslovakia. According to this biography, he was able to work freely only for a limited period, from 1963 to 1969, and exhibited only twice in Prague during his lifetime. His studio then served, still according to Artsper, as a meeting place for artists and art historians.
Floral Signal II, dated 1964 in a sales catalogue, is an oil on canvas measuring 146 × 95.5 cm, signed at the lower left and again on the reverse. The catalogue identifies the art historian Jiří Kubena, presented as a close friend of Medek, as the work’s first owner. A bibliographic reference cites the work in the publication for the exhibition Dvacet dosud nevystavených obraz? z let 1960-65, held at the Oblastní galerie in Liberec from 3 March to 20 April 1966, as number 12 and without an illustration; this reference dates it to 1965 and gives different dimensions.
