Markus Lüpertz’s practice spans painting and sculpture, while his activities also include university teaching and, since the 1980s, stage design. He studied at the school of fine arts in Krefeld with Laurens Goosens, then attended classes at the Düsseldorf academy of fine arts for one semester. In 1962, he moved to West Berlin and founded Galerie Großgörschen 35 there with Bernd Koberling and Karl Horst Hödicke.

In the early 1960s, he developed “Dithyrambic Painting”, an approach he accompanied in 1966 with the manifesto Kunst, die im Wege steht. Dithyrambisches Manifest (“Art That Stands in the Way. Dithyrambic Manifesto”). In the early works associated with this inquiry, simple forms — houses, tree trunks, tents or fragments of landscape — are isolated and enlarged, then transformed through colour and pictorial material. From the mid-1970s, the “style painting” series make style itself a subject of painting, rather than the name of a stable manner.

Mythological subjects take on increasing importance in his work from the 1980s; his repertoire includes, in particular, Apollo, Daphne, Heracles, Mercury, Orpheus and Achilles. From the early 1980s, he regularly practises sculpture, working mainly by modelling before casting in bronze. After casting, he partially paints some bronzes: the vivid colours and marks he applies to them do not necessarily follow the anatomical volumes. Alongside his artistic activity, he teaches at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe, where he is appointed professor in 1976, and then at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts from 1986; he becomes its director in 1988.
