Jacob Toorenvliet (1640–1719), born in Leiden, learned the fundamentals of his profession from his father Abraham, a glass painter and drawing master. His career took him to Italy and Vienna before he returned to the Netherlands in 1679. After a period in Amsterdam, he was established in Leiden again by 1686.
Portraits and genre scenes occupy an important place in his work. Musicians, physicians and everyday figures form a repertoire attentive to people and their interactions. He also contributed to drawing instruction: with Willem van Mieris and Carel de Moor, he helped establish a drawing academy in Leiden. Between 1695 and 1712 he regularly held positions of responsibility within the city’s Guild of Saint Luke.
