The German painter Carl Anton Joseph Rottmann (1797–1850) pursued landscape painting, from the mountains of Bavaria to sites in Italy and Greece. The text attributed to Charles Blanc distinguishes, in an early phase, small landscapes drawn from the Bavarian mountains. In 1821, he is in Munich, where he studies drawing, and then travels to Italy from 1825 to 1827.
Between 1830 and 1832, he paints a series of Italian landscapes for Louis I of Bavaria, intended for part of the arcades of Munich’s Hofgarten. Commissioned by the king to depict the classical sites of Greece, he visits the country in 1834–1835. In 1841, Louis I appoints him court painter. A sales catalogue also lists, under the title “Alpenlandschaft im Abendlicht”, an oil painting on board measuring 10.6 × 28 cm; it states that the inscription “Prof. Rottmann” on the reverse is in another person’s hand.
