Albert Lebourg

Winter landscapes and sites by the water are among Albert Lebourg’s preferred subjects. Neige à Pont-du-Château, painted in oil on canvas in 1885, is held at the Musée d’art Roger-Quilliot in Clermont-Ferrand. Bords de Seine à Bougival, also dated 1885 and painted in oil on canvas, is held at the Musée du Petit Palais in Geneva. Remorqueurs à Rouen is an oil painting on canvas by Lebourg. Lebourg was born in Montfort-sur-Risle on 1 February 1849 and died in Rouen on 6 January 1928.
Trained at the École des beaux-arts de Rouen, he studied there under Gustave Morin and Seignemartin. In 1878 and 1879, he attended classes at Jean-Paul Laurens’s studio to prepare for the competition for the position of drawing teacher with the City of Paris, before abandoning this plan. In 1878 he exhibited Une Femme lisant at the Salon de Paris. The following year, he took part in the fourth Impressionist exhibition with works inspired by Algeria and Normandy. He also took part in the fifth Impressionist event in 1880. In 1887, he was invited to the exhibition of the Groupe des XX in Brussels.
In 1890, he exhibited at the first Salon of the Société nationale des beaux-arts, of which he became a member in 1893. Two years later, he took lodgings at 20 quai de Paris in Rouen. In autumn 1895 and early 1896, he visited Holland with the painter Horace Mélicourt. In 1918, the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris organised a retrospective devoted to his work. He kept a studio on rue de Poissy in Paris until 1920, then returned to his home in Rouen. Afflicted with paralysis, he stopped painting in 1925.
