Listed as a Canadian painter, Anthony Law (1916–1996), also known as C. Anthony Law, Charles Anthony Francis Law or Tony Law, was an official war artist for the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War.
Alongside his career as a naval officer, he continued to work as a professional artist, retiring from the navy in 1966. At the beginning of the conflict, he served on several motor torpedo boats in the English Channel and took part in the action against the German cruisers Scharnhorst and Gneisenau in 1942. During this period, he painted, among other subjects, on shore while repairs were being carried out. A temporary posting in 1943 enabled him to depict several Canadian ships, including HMCS Haida, Chaudière, Huron and Restigouche. The Canadian War Museum holds sketches of shipmates, ships on which he served and ports he visited during the war. In an interview published by the Québec Chronicle-Telegraph in December 1943, Law discussed his approach to painting the war at sea.
