Moritz von Schwind (1804–1871), an Austrian painter born in Vienna, develops a body of work at the intersection of decorative painting, literature and music. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna, he settles in Munich in 1828, where he receives instruction from Cornelius. After stays in Karlsruhe and Frankfurt, he becomes a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich in 1847. His interest in music and literature is also reflected in his connections with Franz Schubert, whose music he illustrates in some instances, and with the writers Bauernfeld and Grillparzer. Chivalry, folklore and folk songs inform the subjects that sources associate with his work.
A significant part of his activity is devoted to monumental decoration. In 1834, he is commissioned to create murals for the New Residence of Louis I, inspired by works by Ludwig Tieck, including scenes from Phantasus. In 1839, he is commissioned to decorate the new academy in Karlsruhe. He also works at Wartburg Castle, on the Sängerkrieg and the story of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary. In Vienna, he creates a cycle based on the legend of Melusine and depictions of virtuoso musicians for the foyer of the State Opera.
Alongside these commissions, Schwind produces easel paintings and cartoons painted in watercolour. His cycle The Seven Ravens, created in 1857 around tales by the Brothers Grimm, bears witness to his interest in fairy tales. Folk tales, Germanic legends and medieval episodes occupy a major place in his work; The Morning Hour, held at the Schackgalerie in Munich according to Universalis, is noted as an exception to this orientation. A Saint Andrew described in a Lempertz catalogue also illustrates his use of watercolour: the work is a watercolour on paper executed over a chalk preparation and measures 133 × 37.6 cm. The catalogue relates it to cartoons for stained-glass windows in a church in Landshut made around 1853.
