Jacob Duck, a Dutch painter said to have lived from 1600 to 1667, is presented as an Utrecht artist who specialised in interiors with soldiers. According to Léonard Pouy’s study, his compositions can also lean towards greater gallantry, sometimes combining a guardroom scene with a convivial gathering.
In Soldaten in einer Wachstube, an oil painting on panel measuring 39 × 62 cm, the scene is described as having been executed in a few brushstrokes, with a limited, almost monochrome palette. Pouy also notes a certain repetition in Duck’s works, which she places in the context of the renewal of the genre of guardroom scenes.
