Mihály Munkácsy

Born : 1844Died : 1909Documented citizenships : Hungary

Mihály Munkácsy moved from scenes of the everyday lives of peasants and people living in poverty to large-scale biblical and decorative compositions, whose scale marks several stages in his work. Born Mihály Leó Lieb, he is also known as Mihály Munkácsy.

After training with the itinerant painter Elek Szamossy, he made his way to Pest, where he sought the support of established artists. With the help of the landscape painter Antal Ligeti, he obtained a state scholarship to study abroad: in Vienna with Karl Rahl in 1865, in Munich in 1866, and then in Düsseldorf with Ludwig Knaus from 1868. He travelled to Paris in 1867 to visit the Exposition Universelle, then settled there with the landscape painter László Paál.

In 1869, he painted The Last Day of a Condemned Man, which received the gold medal at the Paris Salon the following year. He went on to create three large compositions devoted to Christ: Christ in front of Pilate (1882), Golgotha (1884) and Ecce Homo (1896). His monumental work also includes Glorification of the Renaissance, a ceiling completed in 1888 for the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, and Hungarian Conquest, intended for the Hungarian Parliament. Christ in front of Pilate was donated to the Art Gallery of Hamilton in 2002 by Joey and Toby Tanenbaum. In 2005, the Hungarian National Gallery organised a retrospective in Budapest bringing together up to 120 works on loan from institutions, museums and private collections.
