Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Documented citizenships : France

Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759–1840), born in Saint-Hubert to a family of painters, settled in Paris in 1783. There he deepened his botanical observation and developed a practice combining descriptive accuracy with elegant composition. Connections with scientific circles and the court encouraged a career devoted to plants, flowers and their reproduction in print.

Supported by Joséphine de Beauharnais, he worked from the plant collections at Malmaison. Les Liliacées, followed by Les Roses, published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824, gave this undertaking exceptional scope. Watercolour and its translation into prints conveyed forms, tonal nuances and the distinguishing features of species. His plates also became decorative models, circulating far beyond botanical books on objects and throughout the applied arts.

This profile brings together identity references for Pierre-Joseph Redouté and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
