Alexander Altmann

Born : 1878Died : 1932Documented citizenships : France

Alexandre Altmann, a Russian-French painter born in 1878 and deceased in 1932, was born in Sobolevka, Ukraine, according to a biographical source. After studying at the School of Fine Arts in Odessa, he left the city on foot in 1905 for Paris, where he found a studio at La Ruche.

There he met Émile Schuffenecker. In 1912, the Devambez gallery devoted an exhibition to him alongside Ignacio Zuloaga and Jean Arnavielle, presented as an exhibition by the group L’Œuvre libre. The gallery subsequently organised a major solo exhibition.

Altmann often stayed in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in the Basque Country, in the company of Gabriel Deluc, a young artist from Saint-Jean-de-Luz whom he had met at La Ruche. A lot attributed to Altmann, entitled « Paysage d’hiver », is described as an oil on canvas measuring 64 × 64 cm.

This profile brings together identity references for Alexander Altmann and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
