Carlo Dolci, born in Florence in 1616, entered Jacopo Vignali’s workshop at a very young age. By 1632 he was recorded as an independent painter. His career belonged to Florence’s artistic community and benefited from patrons connected with the Medici. Portraiture and still life formed part of his practice, but religious subjects predominated.
He combined precise drawing, luminous colours and meticulous finish to give sacred figures an immediate, contemplative presence. Saint Andrew Praying before his Martyrdom ranks among his important compositions. His imagery circulated widely through replicas and copies, including those made by his daughter Agnese. This reception makes it necessary to distinguish autograph works from workshop productions, an essential distinction in understanding the extent of his pictorial legacy.
This profile brings together identity references for Carlo Dolci and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
