German painter Helmut Kolle (1899–1931), also known by the pseudonym Helmut vom Hügel, pursued his career between Berlin and France. Following his first Berlin exhibitions, he settled in Paris in 1924. Visits to the Louvre and an interest in Géricault and Manet accompanied a figurative practice combining French references, elements of Cubism and German expression. Young men feature among his subjects, as in his 1930 painting of the runner Ladoumègue. From 1928 he lived with Wilhelm Uhde in Chantilly, and he also painted Uhde’s portrait. Several Paris exhibitions marked his brief career. Uhde subsequently devoted a book to the artist and his work, published in 1935.
