Noel Harry Leaver (1889–1951) grew up in Burnley, where his family settled a few months after his birth in Yorkshire. He won several prizes while studying at the Royal College of Art and returned to Burnley in 1919. Between 1929 and 1939 he served as visiting master at the School of Art, whose pupils regularly visited Towneley to draw.
His watercolours also circulated as prints, including a series of English cathedrals reproduced in calendars. Towneley holds thirty-three watercolours and a pencil drawing in its permanent collection, alongside sixty-one watercolours from the Bracewell collection on loan from the Towneley Hall Society. A publication accompanied the first exhibition of this latter collection in 2009, documenting another substantial connection between his work and Burnley.
This profile brings together identity references for Noel Leaver and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
