József Molnár (1821–1899) was a Hungarian painter whose studies took him to Venice, Rome and Munich. He subsequently settled in Stuttgart, where he painted portraits, before returning to Hungary in 1853. Based in Pest, he developed a practice encompassing landscapes and historical scenes.
The Hungarian National Gallery holds The Departure of Abraham, dated 1850, and an Idyll in Pompeii from the mid-1870s. Alongside these biblical and ancient subjects, he also painted scenes of everyday life. A Mother and Child Crossing a Sluice, a signed oil on canvas catalogued by Schuler, offers one example. An old label on the reverse gives the Hungarian title Zsilip, meaning “sluice”. Molnár died in Budapest in 1899.
