Johan Christian Dahl (1788–1857) was a Norwegian Romantic landscape painter. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter in Bergen, he continued his training at the Copenhagen Academy. He travelled to Dresden in 1818 and became a close friend of Caspar David Friedrich. His Italian journeys brought opportunities to paint with Franz Ludwig Catel in Naples and to join Bertel Thorvaldsen’s circle in Rome.
Close observation of nature underpins his painting. Although he worked in Germany for much of his life, Norway remained an essential source of subjects: visits generated sketches and studies that he subsequently developed into paintings. Cloud studies form another recurring aspect of his investigations into light and atmosphere. Landschaft mit Wolkenstudie, for example, depicts clouds illuminated by the setting sun.
This profile brings together identity references for Johan Christian Dahl and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
