Roberto Masi

Born : 1940Died : 2011Documented citizenships : Italy

Roberto Masi, an Italian painter born in Florence in 1940 and deceased in 2011, is presented by the gallery as a representative of Italian primitivism; the gallery also describes him as a painter of views and landscapes. His path towards painting first took him through studies in computer science, followed by a university degree in commerce. He then attended the studios of Pietro Annigoni, Enzo Pregno and Antonio Bueno; his meeting with Professor Pilade Giacometti preceded his enrolment at the Accademia in Florence. He began working as a painter in 1962. In his own words, his enquiry concerns harmony between colours and the way they respond to one another. This concern is a documented reference point in his painting practice.

Painting was not his only field of activity: he also worked in scenography and became stage manager at the Piccolo Teatro in Florence. The exhibition history recorded by the gallery includes a presentation at Galleria Jean Camion in Paris in 1982, followed by an invitation to present his work at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 1984. The list then mentions the National Museum of Fine Art in Valletta in 1988, Galleria Renzo Spagnoli Arte in Lugano in 1989, and Laupheim, Germany, in 1990. It also notes exhibitions at Fondazione Ad Sidera in Castiglion Fiorentino in 2009 and at the Ministero degli Affari Esteri in Valletta in 2010. In 2007, Masi published the volume «Sintesi di un realismo magico». The gallery states that his works are held in national and international collections, without specifying their names.
