Carl Ebert (1821–1885), a German landscape painter born in Stuttgart and deceased in Munich, devoted himself especially to forest scenes. After the early death of his parents, relatives enabled him to study at the Stuttgart Academy of Fine Arts, where he worked with Gottlob Friedrich Steinkopf and Johann Friedrich Dieterich. In 1846, he settled in Munich and became a private pupil of Eduard Schleich. Together with Friedrich Salzer and Richard Zimmermann, he visited the artists’ colonies of Polling and Eberfing; he later accompanied Schleich and Carl Morgenstern on study trips to France, Belgium and the Netherlands.
His travels also took him to Italy, in 1857 and then in 1872, and to Bosnia, where he stayed for several months in 1881. He received a state pension from King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Crown of King Charles I of Württemberg. Among the documented works is *Waldinneres mit Flöte spielendem Pan*, an oil on wood measuring 17.5 × 23.5 cm, monogrammed “E.” at lower left. The published provenance of this work mentions the estate of the painter Hermann Baisch, identified by a stamp, followed by Professor Helmut Becher; it also records a deposit at the Westfälisches Landesmuseum until 2015.
This profile brings together identity references for Carl Ebert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
